Job Description The Laser/Satellite Safety Engineer designs, develops, and tests all aspects of electrical components, equipment, and machinery. May use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform assignments. Apply principles and techniques of electrical engineering to accomplish goals. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. Rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Perform a variety of tasks. Lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Typically reports to a Task Leader. Provides expert judgment and analysis for technical support of solutions for safety of satellite during laser operations. Includes:

-Conducting studies, analysis and assessments of potential satellite safety solutions, including deconfliction (predictive avoidance).

  • Developing concepts, plans, and procedures for laser systems to implement satellite safety solutions.

  • Performing in-depth reviews and assessments of laser system technical analyses, test reports, operations concepts, and problem investigations of complex technical issues.

  • Conducting verification and validation reviews, analysis and assessments of laser system capabilities for deconfliction and satellite safety. Includes on-site visits and documenting results in reports.

  • Providing comprehensive reviews and assessments of laser capabilities for satellite safety and documenting results in reports or presentations to the customer.

  • Performing probabilistic risk analyses of laser hazards to satellites. Requires use of complex, engineering-level tools.

  • Ability to develop competence in sophisticated software tools used for laser/satellite deconfliction analysis, satellite susceptibility analysis and probabilistic risk analysis.

  • Extensive collaboration with Laser Clearinghouse, High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, laser system developers, weapon operators and other stakeholders.

Required Skills Secret clearance required; eligible to obtain Top Secret Access. Requires a Bachelor's degree. Ten years of experience in systems engineering analysis, application of software tools to technical problems, and system integration and testing. Requires flexibility and ability to work independently on several projects. Ability to work closely with military customers, anticipate mission needs, respond proactively and integrate complex technical concepts are keys to successful job accomplishment.

Desired Experience: Master’s or Doctorate degree in a technical field Experience in satellite design and satellite operations or expertise in high energy lasers applications Five years or more of experience with U.S. military space systems or lasers is a plus.
