Serco Lead Marine Engineer in California

Position Description

Are you seeking a hybrid opportunity working in a fast, team based, multi-disciplined environment, while collaborating with others and supporting the navy, coast guard, and commercial customer, Serco has a great opportunity for you! This position is located in Victoria, British Columbia, however for the right candidate; a remote work schedule may be considered.

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher).

Serco supports multiple customers including government customers and shipyards in various stages of design as well as in-service support of ships, submarines, crafts and other floating structures.

The Lead Marine Engineer leads teams of less experienced technical staff to which the individual is assigned and applies knowledge of marine engineering and mechanical engineering to perform routine analyses and prepare engineering systems such as fluid systems, propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, HVAC systems, and electrical systems in support of the design of ships, crafts, and other floating structures.

You will be leading a team working for a Ship Design Manager or Engineering Manager designing ships, or ship systems and working closely with the customer and other Serco teams. You could also be assigned to In Service Support programs of a ship or submarine where you will be required to develop engineering specifications for refits and modernisation as well as provide engineering support for resolving queries from the production teams for the client.

You will apply basic mechanical and marine engineering knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards, and will use engineering tools and software to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas.

In this role you will:

  • Working with clients to formulate requirements and specifications and then develop these into concept designs, system functional and detailed designs.

  • Developing drawings and providing oversight of drawing development.

  • Performing marine engineering analysis and design for new ship and submarine systems designs, by performing Class Rule calculations and detail design of propulsion shafting and bearings, auxiliary/ fluid systems design, auxiliary equipment selection, component and pipe sizing, pressure drops and flow calculations, pump selection and material selection.

  • Performing design studies and developing reports on various areas in marine engineering discipline such as exhaust system back pressure calculations, EEDI calculations, etc.

  • Designing salient systems such as bilge and ballast system, fire-main system, compressed air system, seawater and freshwater cooling system, fuel oil system, prewetting system etc.

  • Developing Technical Product specifications for various system components, standalone systems and mechanical equipment for procurement

  • Reviews and determines the Vendor supplied Information for suitability of purpose.

  • Performing feasibility studies and developing whitepapers for procuring standalone systems

  • Developing machinery arrangements, analyzing requirements for area and volume, and maintenance envelopes, illustrating functional allocation of spaces considering location and adjacency constraints.

  • Performing option and trade off studies including access to various components for the operation and maintainers.Developing equipment shipping and unshipping routes.

  • Developing Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Inputs/ Outputs signal list, functionalities, and logic.

  • Performing piping system calculations using software such as PIPENET, PIPEFLOW or PIPE-FLO. Expertise in fluid flow analysis using CFD tool would be an asset.

  • Performing analysis and selection of resilient mounts for various equipment in the machinery spaces.Reviewing design proposals and specifications as well as developing the build specifications for mechanical systems and propulsion system.

  • Performing risk analysis of functional design and impact of changes to major systems.

  • Performing functional review of detailed design 3D models and final acceptance

  • Participate in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.

  • Preparing documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.

  • Development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provides inputs to technical reports and presentations.

  • Preparation and presentation of formal briefings and staff seminars.

  • Train, guide and mentor more junior marine engineers and technical staff.

  • Complies with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security procedures, in the performance of duties.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have :

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of performing routine analyses and preparing engineering systems such as fluid systems, propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, HVAC systems, and electrical systems.

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Good or higher).

  • More than ten (10) years relative work experience is required.

  • A demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams and programs.

  • Due to the remote flexibility of the position, candidates outside of the commutable area must be willing to travel up to 50% (within Canada) for this role.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Operational experience as a sea going engineer may be considered an asset

  • Possessing a Professional Engineer’s designation is considered an asset.

  • Current active Reliability Status clearance.

In compliance with local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary target range for this role is $130,000.00; however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
