Position Description

Are you seeking a role in a fast, team based, multi-disciplined environment, while collaborating with others and supporting the navy, coast guard, and commercial customer, Serco has a great opportunity for you! This position will be located in Victoria, British Columbia.

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain and maintain an active Reliability Status Level Clearance.

The Junior Naval Architect receives technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff to which the individual is assigned and applies basic knowledge of naval architecture to perform routine analyses and prepare basic naval architectural deliverables in support of the design of ships, craft, and other floating structures.

You will be part of a member team working with more experienced naval architects for a Ship Design Manager or Engineering Manager designing ships, or ship systems and working closely with the customer and other Serco teams.You could also be assigned to In Service Support programs of a ship or submarine where you will be required to develop engineering specifications for refits and modernisation as well as provide engineering support for resolving queries from the production teams for the client. You will support the development of engineering change specifications and respond to queries from the production floor that require an engineering assessment during the refits of ships and submarines under the guidance of a functional manager. You will perform Logisitics Support Analysis under the guidance of ILS Manager.

In this role, you will:

  • Apply basic naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas:

  • Participates in the development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provides inputs to technical reports and presentations. Provide hull form and hydrodynamic performance, including development of hull form geometry and lines plans, hydrostatics and curves of form, resistance and powering estimates, propulsor design and performance, appendage design, maneuvering analyses, seakeeping analyses, development of model test plans and observing and analyzing data from model tests or full-scale trials

  • Provides engineering solutions for repairing the defects identified in structural surveys

  • Identifies correct non-destructive testing methods to be applied to identify defects in structures during survey or post repairs

  • Provides engineering solutions to production issues related to hull structure

  • Ensure primary consideration is given to Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in all activities undertaken within areas of responsibility

  • Participate in providing weight and stability analyses, including development of weight and center of gravity estimates, performance of intact and damaged stability analyses, performance of deadweight surveys and inclining experiments

  • Participate in providing concept and feasibility design studies addressing whole ship sizing and performance analyses, requirements validation, and design optimization

  • Participate in performing design integration, coordinating inputs from various naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed

  • solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters

  • Participate in performing structural design, developing hull girder bending moments and structural configurations and scantlings in accordance with appropriate rules or design standards, development of superstructure, mast, and local support structure to withstand primary and secondary loads

  • Make general arrangements and configuration, developing requirements for area and volume, preparing overall ship arrangement concepts and drawings illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering location and adjacency constraints, performing special studies including access and line of sight analyses, assisting in detailed layouts of individual compartments such as living and berthing spaces, ship support spaces, storerooms, and shops.

  • Assists with the review of design proposals and specifications.

  • Participate in scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.

  • Assists in preparing documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.

  • Assist with preparation and presentation of formal briefings and staff seminars

  • Complies with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security procedures, in the performance of duties.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or related engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, or equivalent in training and a minimum of 0-2 years of relevant experience. ( I n some cases, educational requirements may be adjusted or waived for more than 3 years applicable work experience.

  • Must be eligible to obtain a Reliability Level Clearance prior to employment. (Canadian Citizen / Permanent Residency is required) .

  • Travel up to 10% may be required.

  • Must have the basic naval architectural knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products in one or more technical areas.

Additional desired experience and skills:

  • Registration as an Engineer in Trainee (EIT) is considered an asset.

  • General knowledge about the principles of operation of a submairine, its design/layout, and types of systems in it is considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of types of structural defects normally seen on marine vessels.

  • Knowledge behavior of structural materials under load and environmental conditions

  • Experience with ship checks, ship visits and surveys and shipyard design reviews would be considered and asset.

  • Prior co-op term, internship or experience in Marine industry, Oil and Gas, Department of National Defence, Department of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (Canadian Coastguard), heavy engineering industry/field jobs would be considered an asset.

In compliance with local laws regarding pay transparency, the salary range for this role is $69,500 CAD to $80,000 CAD however, Serco considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.
